“There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.”
Reading opens up so many opportunities and impacts on an incalculable number of other learning opportunities.
At Heworth we value to the need for children to access the treasure that lies within books and place a huge importance on each child learning to read. We deliver a systematic approach to the teaching of phonics that is consistent and sustained throughout our Early Years and Key Stage One.
A 20 minute phonics session is delivered daily, which follows the ‘Letters and Sounds’ scheme and supported by Jolly Phonics. This programme has been devised by the Department of Education. It is our aim that our phonic lessons are always interactive, exciting and support all learning styles.
